Talked to several gate agents about bereavement fare (traveling for my mother's death and had a death certificate) and all seemed clueless, directing me to customer service. Going through Charlotte, stopped at Customer Service Desk and they were clueless (I honestly don't think the guy there knew what bereavement was) and he directed me to a gate agent. When I told him the gates had directed me to him, he got a bit argumentative and was completely non-helpful and even obnoxious. A terrible experience, especially given the nature of my question. So incredibly insensitive.
