My husband and I flew Air India from CHICAGO TO DELHI ( Dec 26 to Jan.4th 2015). This airline lack the qualities necessary to compete in the world market. Air India is a poor example of the Star Alliance. Not only are the planes dirty and in worn-out condition, the flight staff and desk staff are unprofessional and very very poor communicators. I would not recommend Air India to anyone.
My seat was broken down and uncomfortable. My monitor did not work-- on either out/in bound- the floor was full of crumbs, trash and paper. There was blood on the bathroom door and floor. My tray table NEVER worked and my tray of food slid out into the isle- those are just a few of my complaints. Take note India Air- you need to clean up your planes,, staff and reputation.

I am sorry but I don't agree with the bad reviews.
I just called the US toll free number and had a great customer service experience. I had called with some requests (diabetic food, wheelchair) for my mother in law travelling from New York to Mumbai. My call was quickly answered by a gentleman named Farid. He quickly helped me with the information and I was done with the call in 5 mins.

No hassles and no waiting.

In addition to being a third rate airline, this airline is in the practice of taking hostage at Delhi Airport and asking for cash. My sister in law and her 15 years old son were coming from Afghanistan and booked their flight on Air India because I had respect for India and also Afghans and Indian had enjoyed a long tradition of friendship. When my relatives arrived in Delhi and when they were ready to board the flight the customs/airline stopped them with various pretext that their names were not properly written etc. and were barred from the flight. The customs then asked them to pay 700 Dollars and they will let them fly on the next flight 24 years later. The custom guy took all of their money and they had to borrow money from Afghan travelers at the airport and as result they were left without a dime to even eat. After my relatives arrived in the US I tried to cancel their return trip through the same horrible airlines and I was told to pay hundreds of Dolores in penalty etc. and out of $ 2100, they offered me $ 1350 but then I had to also let them charge my credit card $200.00 penalty fee before they could cancel the return tickets. Avoid this scam and this awful airline at any cost. There are better airlines out there. These people are nothing but highway robbers and thieves.

Bad experience with Air India, I was booked SFO(San Francisco)-BOM(Mumbai) via Singapore round trip 2 months earlier, I was to begin my Journey Sept 9, 2013, on Sept 5th I received phone call from my Travel Agent (Vayama Kayak), that Air India have changed my travel schedule between Singapore and Mumbai on Air India flights, so I would be going Singapore, Delhi, Mumbai and return would be Mumbai, Chennai, Singapore. I said it is alright. But from Singapore to Mumbai via Delhi, I had to get out at the Delhi International terminal and go to Domestic Terminal, there were no airline staff in the Delhi Airport to guide the passengers at the Delhi Airport Terminal, running around some how, asking couple of other airline staff, I reached the Domestic Terminal and Got the Boarding Pass to Mumbai, waiting for boarding, I noticed there were only few passengers at the gate, and boarding did not begin at the time, around 10 minutes passed, I went and asked Air India staff on another Gate, she was telling me that the gate changed as usual to another one, and I learned that the flight is going through Aurangabad.

On my Return Trip, 24 hours earlier I got check in alert email from my Travel agent Vayama Kayak that my flight Air India #572, Departs Sunday, October 6, 2013 5:15 pm IST (12:15 GMT+5)BOM - Chhatrapati Shivaji Arrives Sunday, October 6, 2013 7:05 pm IST (14:05 GMT+5) MAA - Chennai. I promptly reached the the Airport 3 hours earlier, The security person was not letting me go inside the airport, saying that my flight is a Domestic flight and departing from Domestic airport Terminal 1A, which is in Santa Cruz. I had to pay for airport Taxi Rs700 ($12). After reaching Chennai at 7:15 PM, I had to go to International terminal to catch Singapore flight. The Security guards stopped me at the Gate telling me that my flight is after Midnight (12:45 AM), so I can go inside the airport only 3 hours earlier. So I had to stay out side very hot weather until 9PM. The Boarding started around 20 minute late, the flight left with out any delay. Inside the Airplane, seats were like solid wood the cushions were very old and not at all spongy, some how reached Singapore in time. Air India food was slightly spicy. It was very bad experience flying on Air India. I traveled many time Singapore Air, Emirates, Jet Air and Spice Jet and few other airlines but this was too much with out any reason.

I just called customer service and asked them to fix my middle name, because the travel agent had misspelled it. I had a so so connection, but I think the gentleman got it corrected.

I fully share the views expressed by so many friends and would like to state that this is a third class airline having no concept of customer service at all.Just like others i have wasted my time for getting some one to talk for my redemption of milege but i have also thrown my phone in disgust and feelings of abuse for Airindia.I think the higher authorities may be reading all these coments and must be smiling at the wonderful response they are getting.Would some one will care to look into the complaints and take necessary steps?

Terrible customer service!! I am trying on given customer care number since last 1 week and listening that all reps are busy. 4 hours i was on call every day. I like to redeem my miles but, they don't have any direct number to reach some one and solve our issue in few mints, in other lines they don't give us the chance to complain.This company obviously has no concept of customer service nor care about their customers time. Given this attitude would you really want to fly with them ? I am hoping some authority should take action against air India to improve its customer care service in USA. I am trying on india numbers they always give me 212-407-1612 which one is not working and 212-4071365 always on waiting list, I think so airindia is paying money to all sleepy mens, they are just doing vacation here in USA.
