10/19/2016 DTS Defense Travel System - The entire DTS process is entirely too cumbersome
The entire DTS process is entirely too cumbersome and useless layers of approvals.
The hold time is ridiculous. I can't think of one time that I have called in and haven't had to wait more than 30 mins to 1 hour. Imagine your fustration when someone does pick up, but then hangs up as soon as they pick up. Then, when it comes to the approval process, they could push your travel back for something really simple. Then if your command drags their hindlegs getting around to approving the authroization within a timely manner, you may have to call CTO 24 hours prior to travel. You then get to experience the lovely hold time again, ranging anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours. It's amazing that with so many complaints, it seems little has been done to streamline or chuck the system. DTS directly contributes directly to "travel rage" before, during and after.

This DTS System/Software should be canceled and something that works put in place. I just called the help desk and the phone made a few noises and was disconnected twice. I travel all the time and have come to the conclusion that if you change anything while you're TDY, you should cancel the entire order/voucher and the start over. Nobody other than the government would pay for such a poorly designed systems.

6/8/2016 DTS Defense Travel System - An absolutely atrocious system to use
An absolutely atrocious system to use. Usability should have negative infinity star rating. I am trying to book to the following location: CAMP PENDLETON USMC, CA. I extended my search out to 50 miles when the basic 10 mile search yielded nothing when looking for lodging and the DTS return was STILL an empty set. You can't tell me that there aren't hotels accepting the government rate within 50, yes FIVE ZERO, miles of Camp Pendleton, California.. literally the largest U.S. Marine Corps installation on the planet. I could call directly in 5 minutes and have a cheap booking on base at Pendleton Ward.... but I am forced to use this system approved by a bombastic simpleton and probably costing hundreds of millions to develop and maintain and then countless more millions in lost productivity due hours of frustration and time spent on hold with the DTS help desk.
My case in point...I requested CTO travel assistance and got the following response (you can't make this up): "BQ RESERVATIONS ARE AVAILABLE VIA DTS SYSTEM". No.. they most certainly ARE NOT!!! That is why I requested CTO assistance in booking them MORON! Worst travel booking system in existence. Commercial systems which worked this poorly would fold within 6 months. Now on hold for the past hour waiting on the wonderful (but ALWAYS busy... hmmmm, correlation there??) DTO help desk to grace me with their time .. to be fair to that organization.. every time I have called them they have been part of the solution... but the operators at the help desk sincerely deride the system as much as the frustrated personnel trying to book their own travel do. Probably even more since they have to deal with it on a daily basis.

Can not get through to customer service in over a week. There is no help/assistance when you need it, yet the member is responsible to pay the Debt occurred during TDY on time. If it is not payed on time the members credit is effected.

- Nothing but frustrated with DTS as the system is always down, SATO doesn't pay on time and they book flights but if you book yourself you could get cheaper but it's mandated that you use the system. A system in which it is mandated to use a more costly system. . This system does not work well for service members.Terrible interface. Even though DTS is deemed "green" or accessible, functionality is hindered within .mil domain due to reliance far too many confirmations. the best way to ruin travel.
. Travel voucher history:1) the 1990s - traveler received a cash payment "advance" for expected travel costs, filed a paper voucher upon return2) 1995-2010 - the government travel card appears and corporate profit is inserted, advanced disappear, debt burden is placed on military member, paper voucher still filed, voucher usually pays out before travel card bill becomes overdue3) 2010-present - DTS or other automated system inserted, debt burden remains on military member, paper voucher not permitted in most cases, voucher rarely pays out before travel card bill becomes overdue, corporation happily charges overdue fee to military memberA new era in government travel. A Project Engineer I work with indicated that his time is billed at $150.00 an hour. To have him spend his time trying to fill out this is a waste of money. The Government could hire 15 people at $10 an hour to spend an hour on this website for him.

12/28/2015 DTS Defense Travel System - No one understands this system unless you work in the DTS program
No one understands this system unless you work in the DTS program (the only 5-star review here). I've worked in finance for six years and still don't understand DTS. It's impossible to reach a CS rep! Why is the government still using this system? Let's go back to the DD Form 1351-2 days.

9/17/2015 DTS Defense Travel System - There is nothing wrong using DTS for your travel
There is nothing wrong using DTS for your travel if you are properly trained by your organization's Echelon DTA.

The advent of the Defense Travel System (DTS), the service member is able to track his/her voucher from beginning to end on his/her office computer.

It is not necessary to have lived through the previous stages of government travel to understand the current system, but it does help to have an understanding of the history of travel to better deal with the challenges of the future implementation of government credit cards and DTS.

As Mr. Allen said "Only fools who do not heed the lessons of History, are doomed to repeat it!" Travel professionals need to be aware of where we have come from in order to better facilitate the future. Understanding the obstacles of the old system may circumvent challenges in the new one."
