Crunchy Brown Particles in Expired Jif Creamy Peanut Butter: Causes & Safety Advice

May 10, 2018

I opened a 48 oz jar of Jif Creamy Peanut Butter (expiry 10/06/2019, lot #7279425032263) from a Sam’s Club double pack and found crunchy brownish material inside. What could this be, and is it safe to eat?

Response from CustomerServiceNumbers.com

Those brown, crunchy bits are most likely hardened peanut oils or tiny peanut fragments that have oxidized over time. Commercial peanut butters like Jif® are generally good unopened for up to 6–24 months, but once opened they’re best used within 2–3 months

. Since your jar expired in October 2019, it’s far past its safe‑use period and could have developed off‑flavors or spoilage. I recommend discarding that jar and, if you’d like a replacement or refund, contacting Jif Consumer Relations at 1‑800‑283‑8915 (M–F, 8 AM–5 PM EST)
