Gibson Customer Service: Phone, Warranty, Guitar Repair & Reviews

If you need help identifying a Gibson guitar, filing a warranty claim, arranging a repair, returning an online order or finding information about a serial number, start with Gibson Consumer Service. Have the instrument’s serial number, purchase information and clear photographs ready because model identification and warranty eligibility often require more than the serial number alone.

Gibson Customer Service Contact Information

Have photographs ready when asking Gibson to identify an instrument. Gibson’s current support process asks customers with identification questions to provide full front and back photos, close-ups of the front and back of the headstock, photographs of labels or other markings, the serial number and any known history. A serial number by itself may not uniquely identify every vintage Gibson model.

Which Gibson Support Route Should You Use?

  • General Gibson guitar question: Call 1-800-444-2766, email service@gibson.com or use the official support form.
  • Identify or date a Gibson guitar: Review the Serial Number Guide and send Gibson detailed photos and known instrument history when necessary.
  • Warranty issue: Review the written warranty for the exact Gibson product and contact Consumer Service or an authorized service center.
  • Non-warranty guitar repair or restoration: Contact Gibson Repair & Restoration for an evaluation and quote.
  • Online Gibson.com order: Contact Gibson Consumer Service for order changes, damaged merchandise or returns.
  • Guitar purchased from an authorized dealer: Contact the dealer for its retail return policy and Gibson for applicable manufacturer-warranty support.
  • Replacement part or technical question: Use the Gibson Help Center, manuals, parts resources or Consumer Service.
  • Epiphone, Kramer, MESA/Boogie or KRK product: Use the support route for that specific Gibson Brands product rather than assuming every brand has identical warranty and repair terms.

What to Have Ready Before Contacting Gibson

For faster assistance, gather:

  • The full serial number
  • The model name, if known
  • Purchase date
  • Dealer or website where the instrument was purchased
  • Receipt or other proof of purchase for warranty service
  • Full front and back photographs of the instrument
  • Clear photos of the front and back of the headstock
  • Photos of internal labels, stamps or other markings
  • Close-up photographs of any defect or damaged area
  • Any known information about the instrument’s history
  • Previous Gibson support or repair correspondence

Do not post your complete home address, payment information, private receipts or account credentials in a public review. When discussing a valuable vintage instrument publicly, also consider whether publishing the complete serial number is necessary.

How to Identify or Date a Gibson Guitar

Gibson maintains an extensive Serial Number Guide covering many production periods and manufacturing systems.

Serial-number formats have changed repeatedly over Gibson’s long history. Different eras can use:

  • Ink-stamped numbers
  • Numbers impressed into the headstock
  • Factory ranking numbers
  • Date-based production codes
  • Model-specific formats
  • Internal labels or other markings

A serial number can help narrow down a production period, but it may not always establish the precise model or variation by itself.

For identification help, Gibson currently asks customers to provide:

  • A complete description of the instrument
  • The serial number
  • Any writing or labels inside or on the instrument
  • Full front and rear photographs
  • Front and rear headstock photographs
  • Photos of internal labels or other markings
  • Known purchase, repair or ownership history

Email that information to service@gibson.com or use Gibson’s official contact form.

Why Gibson May Ask for Photos to Identify an Older Guitar

Older Gibson instruments can be difficult to identify from a serial number alone. Manufacturing systems, factory locations, model changes, repairs and reused numbering formats can make additional details necessary.

Photographs can help Gibson evaluate:

  • Body shape
  • Headstock shape and logo
  • Bridge and tailpiece style
  • Pickup configuration
  • Binding and inlays
  • Internal labels
  • Hardware
  • Finish
  • Construction details

This is particularly relevant to vintage guitars where several models may have overlapping production periods.

Gibson Warranty Help

Gibson maintains separate written warranties for different products and collections. Do not assume every Gibson-branded item has identical coverage.

Many current standard Gibson instruments are advertised with a limited lifetime warranty, while specialized collections such as Demo Shop, Mod Collection and Certified Vintage instruments can have their own warranty terms.

Gibson’s current FAQ also states that its instrument warranty is extended to the original retail purchaser and is not transferable to later owners.

Before requesting warranty service, confirm:

  • The exact Gibson product and model
  • The warranty applicable to that product
  • Whether you are the original retail purchaser
  • The original purchase date
  • Whether proof of purchase is required
  • Whether Gibson or an authorized service center should inspect the instrument

Use Gibson’s Warranty Lookup to locate the current written warranty for the appropriate product.

What a Gibson Warranty May Not Cover

Warranty exclusions depend on the written warranty applicable to the instrument.

Common issues that require special attention include:

  • Normal wear
  • Accidental damage
  • Improper storage
  • Temperature or humidity damage
  • Unauthorized modifications or repairs
  • Finish damage caused by incompatible stands or accessories
  • Shipping or carrier damage

Gibson specifically cautions that some rubber or synthetic materials used on guitar stands and some clip-on accessories can react with nitrocellulose lacquer. Finish damage from this type of contact is not treated as a manufacturing defect.

Always read the actual warranty for the exact instrument before assuming a repair is covered.

Gibson Repair and Restoration

Gibson operates a dedicated Repair & Restoration service for non-warranty work.

The program handles Gibson instruments as well as instruments from other brands and offers services including:

  • Professional setups
  • Acoustic and electric guitar work
  • Fret dressing and refretting
  • Body-crack repairs
  • Broken-headstock repairs
  • Neck resets
  • Finish work
  • Major restorations
  • Complete rebuilds

Gibson says Repair & Restoration evaluates each job individually.

After an instrument is received, the repair team performs a more detailed evaluation and provides a quote. Work does not begin until the customer approves the cost.

For current availability and eligibility, contact Gibson before shipping an instrument.

Do not ship a guitar to Gibson without instructions. Contact Gibson Consumer Service or Repair & Restoration first and follow the packaging, authorization and shipping instructions provided for your specific case.

Finding an Authorized Gibson Service Center

Gibson maintains an official dealer and service-center locator.

Use the Gibson Dealer and Service Center Locator and check whether a location is identified as an instrument service center.

Before taking or shipping an instrument to a repair provider:

  • Confirm that the location services Gibson instruments.
  • Ask whether it performs warranty repairs.
  • Describe the instrument and problem.
  • Ask whether an appointment is required.
  • Confirm who is responsible for shipping or transportation.

An authorized Gibson dealer that sells instruments is not necessarily the same thing as an authorized repair facility.

Gibson Online Store Returns

For qualifying products purchased directly from Gibson.com, Gibson’s current Online Store Policy generally permits returns within 30 days of the invoice date.

A return requires a Return Merchandise Authorization, or RMA, obtained through Gibson Consumer Service.

Contact:

For an instrument return, Gibson requires the item to be in brand-new original condition and include the original:

  • Packaging
  • Case
  • Manuals
  • Warranty materials
  • Certificates
  • Accessories
  • Other collateral supplied with the purchase

Depending on the return and product condition, Gibson says a return may be subject to a 15% restocking fee.

Do not send a Gibson.com purchase back without an RMA.

Gibson Orders Purchased From a Dealer

Gibson’s online return policy applies to products purchased directly through Gibson’s online store.

If you purchased a Gibson guitar from:

  • A local guitar shop
  • An authorized Gibson dealer
  • An online musical-instrument retailer
  • Another authorized seller

contact that seller about order status, cancellation, returns, exchanges or retailer refunds.

Gibson’s FAQ specifically tells customers who ordered through an authorized dealer to contact that dealer for the most current order status.

The dealer’s return policy and Gibson’s manufacturer warranty are separate.

Changing or Canceling a Gibson.com Order

Gibson’s current online policy says an order change or cancellation generally needs to be requested within 24 hours of placing the order and standard shipping must have been selected.

Contact Consumer Service at 1-800-444-2766 as soon as possible.

Gibson cautions that it processes orders quickly, so cancellation may not always be possible even when requested promptly.

Damaged Gibson.com Order

If an instrument purchased directly from Gibson arrives damaged or defective:

  • Keep the shipping carton and packing materials.
  • Photograph the exterior packaging.
  • Photograph the instrument and damaged area.
  • Keep the shipping label.
  • Contact Gibson Consumer Service promptly.

Gibson’s current FAQ directs customers with damaged or defective Gibson.com merchandise to 1-800-444-2766 or service@gibson.com.

Do not repair shipping damage yourself before Gibson has had an opportunity to evaluate the claim.

Gibson Garage Nashville

The Gibson Garage Nashville is Gibson’s flagship retail and experience location at:

209 10th Avenue South
Nashville, TN 37203

The current Gibson Garage telephone number is 615-933-6000.

The Garage can assist visitors with:

  • Shopping for Gibson instruments
  • Instrument and maintenance questions
  • Repair advice
  • Accessories
  • Gibson Custom and Made to Measure questions

Do not confuse the Gibson Garage retail telephone number with the main national Gibson Consumer Service number.

Gibson Garage Returns

Products purchased directly from the Gibson Garage Nashville use the Garage’s own store policies rather than the Gibson.com online-store return system.

Most qualifying Garage purchases can generally be returned within 30 days when the merchandise meets the applicable conditions.

Certain Gibson Garage exclusive products, special collections and experiences can be final sale.

If the purchase was made at the Gibson Garage, review the current Gibson Garage Store Policies rather than relying on the online-store rules.

Gibson Parts, Pickups and Accessories

Gibson sells replacement and upgrade products including:

  • Pickups
  • Tuning machines
  • Bridges
  • Tailpieces
  • Strap buttons
  • Pickguards
  • Knobs
  • Control plates
  • Pickup rings
  • Jack plates
  • Potentiometers
  • Switches

Verify compatibility with the exact guitar before ordering.

For an older or unusual Gibson guitar, contact Consumer Service with the model and serial information before assuming a current replacement component is correct.

Gibson Schematics and Wiring Diagrams

Gibson says it maintains an archive of schematics and wiring diagrams for many instruments and amplifiers.

If you need a schematic:

Gibson says it will provide archived documentation when the requested material is available.

Vintage Gibson Guitars and Authentication

A serial number lookup can help date an instrument, but dating and authentication are not always the same thing.

A vintage Gibson may have:

  • Replacement parts
  • Refinishing
  • Neck or headstock repairs
  • Changed electronics
  • Replacement tuners
  • Modified hardware
  • Features shared with more than one model

When contacting Gibson about an older instrument, provide clear photographs and as much documented history as possible.

For a high-value purchase where authenticity materially affects price, consider obtaining an in-person inspection from a qualified vintage-guitar specialist in addition to checking serial-number information.

Gibson Certified Vintage

Gibson also operates a Certified Vintage program for vintage instruments selected and authenticated by Gibson.

Certified Vintage instruments have their own sales and warranty terms. Gibson currently advertises a limited lifetime product warranty for qualifying Certified Vintage instruments for the life of the original purchaser.

Certified Vintage sales can also have significantly different return rules from ordinary Gibson.com instrument purchases, including final-sale provisions after a short quality-review period.

Review the specific Certified Vintage terms before buying or returning one of these instruments.

How to Escalate a Gibson Customer Service Complaint

  1. Contact Gibson Consumer Service at 1-800-444-2766, service@gibson.com or through the official contact form.
  2. Provide the model, serial number, purchase information and a concise description of the problem.
  3. Attach photographs when the issue involves identification, damage, finish, construction or a warranty defect.
  4. Clearly state the requested resolution.
  5. Keep the existing support correspondence and any case information.
  6. If an authorized dealer or repair center is involved, keep the repair estimate or service paperwork.
  7. If the first response does not resolve the issue, reply through the existing support thread and request further review.

For a retailer refund or exchange, continue working with the seller that processed the purchase. Gibson Consumer Service handles manufacturer support but does not replace an independent dealer’s retail return policy.

Gibson Reviews and Complaints

CustomerServiceNumbers.com currently shows a 3.0 out of 5 rating based on one published Gibson review.

The review, posted February 28, 2014, concerns a customer who purchased a small flat-top Gibson guitar new in Chattanooga in 1955. The reviewer wanted the model name and was dissatisfied that Gibson’s automated support process asked for photographs, provenance and other information instead of identifying the instrument from the serial number alone.

Because there is only one visible review, there is not enough CustomerServiceNumbers.com feedback to claim a broad customer-service trend.

The previous editorial text stated that reviews often praise Gibson’s craftsmanship, tone and legacy while complaints focus on customer service, product quality and warranty claims. Those statements are not supported by the single visible CSN review and should not be presented as findings from this site’s review section.

It is worth noting that Gibson’s current identification process still requests photographs and other instrument details for difficult identification questions. For vintage instruments, those details can be necessary because a serial number does not always uniquely establish the precise model.

If you have contacted Gibson, useful first-hand review details include:

  • The model or type of instrument
  • Whether the issue involved identification, warranty, repair, parts or an online order
  • Whether you contacted Gibson directly or an authorized dealer
  • Which support route you used
  • How long it took to receive a response
  • Whether Gibson ultimately resolved the issue

Do not post payment information, home addresses, account passwords or private support documentation.

Gibson Chattanooga i1955,new.the serial no. Is y 4808

February 28, 2014

Unhelpful. all I want to know is the model number of a small flat top I bought in Chattanooga in 1955, new.the serial no. Is y 4808 7. your auto answer service wants pictures, provenance, etc. all I want is the model name— after 54 years! You ought to put this on your website so owners would know nobody at Gibson wants to talk to them, and then we wouldn’t waste our time calling.
