Foursquare says the service was discontinued so the company could focus on improving Foursquare Swarm. There are no announced plans for a direct replacement of City Guide, although some discovery and recommendation features have been incorporated into Swarm.

What Happened to City Guide Data?

Foursquare states that City Guide and Swarm used connected account credentials. Existing City Guide data may therefore already be associated with the user’s Swarm account.

Depending on the type of data, Swarm users may be able to access:

• Earlier City Guide check-in history
• Tips, ratings and photos connected to venue pages
• The default “My Saved Places” list
• Other user-generated account content

Some custom lists and other City Guide information may not appear in Swarm in the same way. Export the account data if you want a separate copy.

How to Download Foursquare and Swarm Data

Foursquare says a data export includes both City Guide and Swarm data.

To request an export through Swarm:

1. Open the Swarm app.
2. Open your profile.
3. Select the settings gear.
4. Open Privacy Settings.
5. Select Initiate Data Download Request.
6. Watch the account email for confirmation and download instructions.

Foursquare says the export may be delivered to the registered email address within seven days. The user must be able to access the account to initiate the export.

The request may also be started after signing in through the Foursquare account website and opening Privacy Settings.

Foursquare Account Recovery Help

Foursquare states that it cannot change a password or login credentials on a user’s behalf. Account recovery must begin through the self-service password-reset process.

1. Open the Foursquare or Swarm sign-in screen.
2. Select Forgot Password?
3. Enter the email address connected to the account.
4. Check the email inbox and spam folder for the reset message.
5. Follow the reset link and create a new password.

Deleting the Swarm app from a phone does not delete the underlying Foursquare account or stored data.

To delete the account through Swarm:

6. Review the warning and confirm deletion.

How to Correct or Claim a Foursquare Business Listing

Foursquare business listings remained active after City Guide closed. Listings may appear in Swarm and may also be distributed through Foursquare’s Places data to partner applications and services.

To claim a listing:

1. Open the Foursquare Business Listings portal.
2. Search for the business name and location.
3. Confirm that the correct venue is displayed.
4. Select the claim option.
